Mit 1.041 Betten nehmen das RBK, seine Standorte Klinik Charlottenhaus und RBK Lungenzentrum Stuttgart (Klinik Schillerhöhe) sowie die Klinik für Geriatrische Rehabilitation im Jahr bis zu 40.000 Patienten stationär auf. Zum Krankenhausbetrieb mit über 3.000 Mitarbeitenden gehören 17 Fachabteilungen in verschiedenen medizinischen Zentren, ein Bildungszentrum und Forschungsinstitute. Die 53 Planbetten umfassende Abteilung hat auf den Gebieten der onkologischen und minimal-invasiven Chirurgie, inklusive der robotischen Chirurgie (DaVinci Xi), überregionale Bedeutung. Die klinischen Schwerpunkte der Abteilung sind neben dem aktiven Darmzentrum die große Chirurgie von Pankreas, Ösophagus und Leber, sowie die operative Behandlung maligner peritonealer Erkrankungen mittels zytoreduktiver Chirurgie und hyperthermer intraabdomineller Chemotherapie (HIPEC). Neben den genannten Schwerpunkten deckt die Abteilung das gesamte Spektrum der Allgemein- und Viszeralchirurgie im Rahmen eines großen Hauses der Zentralversorgung ab.
